impromptu business deal hatched two weekends ago on Twitter resulted in
unexpected national attention for a new locally based printing and advertising
company.
Steve Burke,
CEO of Glen Allen-based Zimmzang.com and a racing enthusiast, learned that
NASCAR star Kenny Wallace was in need of a sponsor for a Feb. 20 Nationwide
Series race in Fontana, Calif. After some "Twittering" with Wallace
the weekend before the race, Zimmzang became the primary sponsor of the popular
#28 car. The Wallace team immediately began thanking Zimmzang on websites and
blogs, while support from throngs of loyal Wallace fans poured in on Zimmzang's
brand-new Facebook page.
"Zimmzang
started out with 20 fans on Facebook, and after the sponsorship announcement we
had hundreds," Burke said. "We had just opened a Twitter account a
few weeks ago, then suddenly we had hundreds of followers. OnZimmzang.com, our number of unique visitors
skyrocketed 1,400 percent the day Kenny announced the sponsorship on Twitter
and Facebook."
Due to the
impact of the recent NASCAR sponsorship, Zimmzang plans to get involved in
other national sports sponsorships.
"Because
of the recession, advertising assets that were once only available to top
companies with huge advertising budgets are now available to small companies
looking for national exposure," Burke said. "These advertising assets
have moved to make themselves more open and flexible to companies like ours
because of the loss of larger companies. This
gives us a unique opportunity to expand our brand while others are pulling
back."

year.
